Xirrus Recognized by Leading Industry Analyst Firm for Global Wireless LAN

Customers Remain Loyal to Xirrus for Their Ability to Provide the Wi-Fi Performance, User Density, Security, and Quality of Service Needed to Replace Wired with Wireless

Xirrus, the Wi-Fi Power-Play that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry is pleased to be recognized in the recent 2010 Gartner “Magic Quadrant for Wireless LAN Infrastructure Global” report based on its ability to execute and completeness of vision within the enterprise market. Xirrus dense radio architecture enables the ability to solve the traditional user density and capacity problems of Wi-Fi as highlighted in Gartner’s report (see below).

“Xirrus is consistently winning in Education, Healthcare, Government, and Events markets where dense wireless users are demanding the same performance and quality of service from Wi-Fi networks as they’ve become accustomed to from wired networks,” said Alan Amrod, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Xirrus. “These vertical segments represent the majority of the Wi-Fi market today and have the most stringent requirements for density and capacity. For the most part, large carpeted-space enterprises have not had a compelling need for Wi-Fi as they are drowning in unused switch ports, however, they too are waking up to the need for greater Wi-Fi density to cover the many mobile notebooks and phones entering their airspace.”

The Xirrus Wi-Fi Array architecture is different from traditional access points controlled by central controllers in two primary ways:

  1. The best practices of Mobile/Cellular Networks show the best way to cover large areas, service-dense user populations, and reduce RF interference is by utilizing multiple radios with a sectored directional antenna system. The Xirrus Wi-Fi Array operates more like a mobile/cellular phone tower than a two-radio omni-directional access point in that every Wi-Fi Array contains between 4 and 24 802.11abgn radios along with a high gain, sectored directional antenna system. The benefits to this approach include more channels providing more coverage, bandwidth, and user density while using fewer devices, cable runs, and switch ports.

  2. The best practices of Switched Networks show the best way to provide greater capacity and resilience for large user populations is by distributing the processing power and intelligence to the edge of the network. The Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays operates more like the wired Switching infrastructure you have in place today than the centralized controller architecture so common in legacy Wi-Fi, because every Wi-Fi Array ships with an embedded controller, firewall, threat sensor, and line rate encryption engine. The benefits to this approach include more controller power per radio, line-rate encryption, fewer bottlenecks, and greater resiliency because of multiple distributed entry points to your backbone – all while having the ability to centrally manage the entire network.

In the spirit of full transparency, the complete ‘2010 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Wireless LAN Infrastructure’ report on Xirrus is provided below:

Xirrus
With one of the more unusual solutions in the market, Xirrus has been a longtime proponent of "controllerless" architectures and beam forming. It remains a specific solution-focused WLAN infrastructure vendor. Its unique architecture and access point design enables it to service dense user environments and traditionally difficult to wire locations (e.g., classrooms, auditoriums and entertainment venues). Xirrus is an excellent choice for enterprises with dense user requirements and as a supplemental vendor in those environments.

Xirrus clarification: “Controllerless” as referred to above is a misnomer as in reality all Xirrus Arrays ship with an embedded controller, firewall, threat sensor, and line rate encryption engine. Xirrus is a distributed architecture that puts the processing power and intelligence at the edge instead of the more common “centralized controller” architecture other vendors typically use. Proportionally, Xirrus delivers far more controller power per radio than competitive offerings that create bottlenecks in their centralized architecture.

Strengths
Unique access point design enables highly concentrated coverage to be accomplished with a single access point, containing up to 16 radios. This has enabled dense user concentrations to be served.

Loyal customer base with high marks for customer service, requirement-based network design and as-promised infrastructure performance.

Cautions
Xirrus remains one of the smaller private companies in the WLAN infrastructure space. Lack of viability in the large enterprise space is a cause for concern.

With the falling price of traditional two-radio access points, and the growing number of cloud-based offerings, Xirrus' price advantage on radios (due to a shared power and physical design) and its lack of a controller requirement has all but evaporated.

Xirrus clarification: “Lack of controller” as referred to above is once again a misnomer as Xirrus ships a controller with each Array. Additionally, the only way to serve dense wireless and user populations and avoid interference is with more radios per device along with tight and automatic RF management to avoid interference. The Wi-Fi Array does this better than any thin AP plus centralized controller offering due to its sectored directional antenna design.

Xirrus is still a point solution in most cases, with many enterprises using it as a supplement to existing networks or even side-by-side in new installations.
